Bink is sick

Post  Marleen on Thu Jun 12, 2008 2:24 am

Dear friends, maybe you have any experience with this.

Yesterday Bink became ill. He has a fever, diarrhoea and vomits. He looks very poor and weak. Over the last months he lost a lot of weight again, probably some 500 grams which is a lot on a cat of 3,8 kg. Most of my cats lose a bit of weight in summer and I thought recently that he looked very good and fit. It was quite a shock when I put him on the scales. But he was not ill until now.

I went to the vet this morning with a urine and faeces sample. The vet tested his blood but could not find traces of an obvious infection. He tested also for FIV and FELV and thank God that THANK GOD was negative. There was not anything to be found in his urine also. The vet told me it could be a virus infection in an early stage so that it does not show in the blood yet. He gave him Metacam (pain relief) and Synulox (antibiotic). He probably will feel a bit better now. But still we do not have an obvious diagnosis.

Bink has never been very strong. After he came to live with us he had a similar episode. He never became a very big boy, a very slow grower. We tried him on anti allergic food last year, resulting in more weight loss. When we put him on normal food, Hills dry food and twice a day a spoonfull of Schezir canned food which is very natural, he started to grow a little. So that's what he gets now everyday.

Does any of you have some good advice to get and keep him in a good condition?

Hello Marleen,

Upsetting news. I always think what did I miss, that he is not strong. Now he is sick again, I feel responsible but don't know what I can do. What I can think off is that, because the delivery didn't went well of Bink as his litter sisters died, and my vet didn't though this kitten would survive, that he is weaker. I really hope as he mature, he will be stronger.

Please update me, how he is doing or please let me now what I can do?

Regards Kirsten

Please do not feel guilty, Kirsten. That is nature!
There was nothing obviously wrong when he came to live with us. And he is pretty fit most of the time.

You would think if anything happened at birth it would result in neurological problems like body control, but that does not seem the case. Something not quite right with is internal organs is more probable. Being born and growing up at your house was a relative sterile environment compared to ours with a few outdoor cats. It is a bit like the Indians, the Settlers and the Flu, Bink being the Indian. But it is frustrating not being able to find an obvious reason for him being weaker and not being able to get him in to very good health.

I have just checked him, he is more active and is walking around miauwing to be let out. (His character is showing again) I think the fever has gone down a bit. So the medicines seem to work. Now I have to get him to eat and drink a little.

Yes maybe that's why, but I really do hope his immune systems will develop and mature, so he can handle the "dirt". Good to hear he is miauwing ...

Marleen, I don't think I can help you, but I wanted to wish your Bink to get better very soon. Let's hope the medicines kick in real good...
It's always sad to see an ill cat.

My best wishes,

Ow Marleen, I can imagine you are very concerned... A week ago Enzo had also some kind of virus, so maybe its in the area... For a few day's he didn't eat well, vomited and had some diarea, but not in the way as Binck. Maybe you can give him some a/d from Hills, its powerfood for cats that are sick. Its looks like pate, smells awful but its very tasty Mad. Royal Canin has a powder called Convalescence Support, you have to mix it with water and doesn't smell Surprised. Ysja lived on both for almost three weeks, she lost some weight but stayed in a 'healthy' condition. Maybe you have to feed him if he's not eating it on his own or eating enough. This way he gets all what he needs for staying in a healthy condition so he is able to get better. You also can cook some chicken with rice and give this (the cooking water) to him, maybe that his bowels will get easy.

Wish you all the luck, a big hug for Bink I love you and if their is something I can do, let me know!

Dear friends,

Bink is a lot better today. He is walking around again and he has a better look in his eyes.

It was really scary to see him so sick again. Friday early morning he vomited a lot, with bloody pieces of slime, thus not holding in any of the medicine. So I took him back to the vet. He injected him lots of water under his skin so that he would not dehydrate and gave him a medicine that would stop the vomiting. Luckily it helped and I could (force-)feed him during the day. Taking in nourishment gave him energy. And during the day every hour he became better. Now he is eating himself. He still has to take a antibiotic for 5 more days. But it seems he will live.

Now we have to find out a way to get his weight back and to get his immune system stronger. That will probably go hand in hand. Thank you all for your support and private mssgs. Still, if any of you has a good suggestion, please let me know.

Happy to read that Bink is better !

Maybe you could try natural products to boost his immune system?

In France, we have this company, Borkhuit, which does a lot of natural products. As the company works with catteries, they think of cats for the conditioning (and for some products too). A lot of breeders use them and are quite happy.

Borkhuit has a "Defense complex" reinforcing immune system. It is composed of:

Maitaké: antiviral, immunochallenging

Lapacho: that treebark is used as an antibiotic, antiviral. Its iron content is very good as an anti anemic and eases red blood cells formation.

Plantain: Rich in "iridoïdes" (sorry could not find it in my dictionnary) and mucialge, plantain has antibactery and anti cough properties which is very helpul in case of broncho pneumonia or rhinopharyngitis symptoms.

This is an example of what they do. 2008 prices (without shipment). If anyone is interested, I can tell you how to order (thru my association Birmania and Co. Florence the president speaks English and has been using their products for years so she could tell you more than me).

Re: Bink is sick

Hello all,

I would like to let you all know that Bink has made a remarkable recovery over the last two weeks. He has gained about 250 grams which strikes me as a lot! He is more vital and active. There even is a mental effect. Before he could whine very persistently about half an hour in the morning and evening insisting to be let out! Now he is more at ease, does not mind to be picked up and wants to be cuddled more. He is playfull and naughty. His coat looks better, more thick and plush, although it is getting warmer outside. It is a reborn Bink allover!

This all leads me to believe he has not been feeling well for a long time, and I did not notice it before. What it has been is still unknown. Probably a (chronic) intestinal infection. The antibiotics must have helped hem over the mountain. I gave him some probiotics after the cure to help his intestinal flora.

Maya suggested to give Bink raw food. So he gets a freezed premix of uncooked ground animal (chicken, lamb, beef, some organs, some bones even) with cooked rice and some oils. No vegetables, corns, pork, added carbohydrates (exept the rice), preservatives, coloring and flavoring. So much more like a natural food wild cats would eat. It seems to do wonders for the immune system. Bink seems to like it. Not that all my cats are very enthusiatic about it. "Raw? Are you trying to poison me, human?" was the first response. silent affraid silent So I am gradually adding some more every day to the old food and slowly they seem to adjust to it. And during the day I still have some Hills dry food at available.

It is probably to early to tell if this is really the thing. For now he is on the way up and I am really glad for it. Thank you all again for your support and suggestions.

Hello,Marleen! Very Happy
I am happy to learn, that Bink recovers!
He is a lot of kisses to it from us!
I think, that it should pick up a special forage. It is dangerous to feed at the same time with an alive and dry forage. cat
