How to keep a tom

How does a breeder keep the toms in a house? I see some pictures of toms in this forum but do they live in the house with their people? What about the smell? The spraying? The yelling, calling?

There are several possibilities.

1. Stud lives in his own space and does visit the home undre supervision...

2. Stud is the only cat in the house and lives with his owner who is extremely lucky coz stud does not spray (very rare). Owner just suffers thru the vocalism, etc.

3. Same as 2 but owner is not lucky and suffers thru vocalism and spraying....

4. Stud lives with owner and females cats. Either stud or queens are on the pill. Owner suffers thru spraying and vocalism, etc...

Also on the forum, don't forget that all male cats you are seeing are not studs. A few of them are neutered.

Wow! Then it seems so difficult to keep a male in a flat. Almost impossible...

I have always wondered about that...

I would love to breed Nebelung, but having one room flat, and considering that there are no other Nebelung breeders anywhere nearby...it's just going to stay a dream .

Kristina : it is difficult but not impossible. However in your case, with only 1 room flat......

But look at it this way, you can always keep a female Neb and you find someone who will keep your male, preferrably someone with no other cat as it will limit the risks of spraying, meowing, etc... or at least delay the risks. So you see, it is not impossible just difficult.

I must say we can be very lucky here, because neither Bedivere nor Caedmon are spraying, so no probs with bad smell. If they would start to they would become neutered - and they know this

Is it possible that RBs are not so gentle? Most of the breeders here don´t have problems with their male NEBs, but most of the RB breeders do. How about var. males? Well, next year I´ll know, because we are going to keep Hillarion for at least one time being stud.

In my opinion it´s a difference if a stud comes in a new home or if he´s already born there. If he comes from another cattery he has to mark his territory while it´s not necessary when he´s there from the beginning. For example Hagen came to us when he was two years old - and he was spraying. It was really hard for about three months, then he was in one room alone and came out in the afternoon when we were at home and had a look at him. It was much better but he still marked. Now he´s chemically neutered and, of course, it´s ok.
I´m not sure if my thoughts are right, but I could imagine.

Damijan, I do not think it makes a difference..... I know of a lot of studs who stayed home and sprayed (maybe not at first but later...)

hm, well... but how many years do we have to use our males as a stud? Imho the shorter - the better. I see a problem in destroying lines by using a stud too often in such a small population. So maybe they´re ( or will be ) here neutered _before_ they become old enough to think they _have to_ spray...
