Is it a Nebelung?
Hello there,
I have had my cat for almost a year, I found him on the street, he was a stray, when he was three months old and his name is Gandalf.
The thing is, he is like no other cat I've seen before, grey, long haired with an extremely soft and glossy coat, I would say silvery. From the first moment I started looking up the breeds and joined a greek forum specialising on cats. Most members said he looked like a Nebelung. You can see him on face book, on this link, because I don't see how I can upload a picture on your forum

I would like to ask: have you heard of a Nebelung cattery in Greece? I haven't been able to find any unformation.
Do you think Gandalf looks like Nebelung? You will see plenty of pictures, from three months old to recent.

Hi,
I think it is coincidence. I never had Gandalf in my cattery - Gandalf the Grey it is probably from Lord of the rings ;-)

Re: Is it a Nebelung?
I do not know everything, but I have never heard of a Nebelung cattery in Greece.
I have to say that it is a beautiful cat, and it would win a special price in the look-a-like game. But does it mather if it is a Nebelung or not? It is still lovely, but a cat breed is not only look-a like but also about genetic predictability, health and character. This beautifull cat does not have known parents.
Regards,
Anke

Re: Is it a Nebelung?
Yes I agree. He looks like Nebelung. There are still catteries which you can not find on the web or people who do not speak english or french so it is always possible to find cat from unknown cattery like I found my first male cat.
BTW somebody told me a story about Nebelung lost in Greece but the story had happy end so there are Nebelungs in Greece

It could also be a kitten of 2 russian blues with longhair gene.
It is a lovely cat; but for me labeling is impossible.

Hello,
I named the cat Gandalf the Grey myself, there could not be a better choice of name, I think.
I just found out there is a cattery with the same name

He did not have an ID chip when I found him, he does now though
It doesn't really matter if he is Nebelung or not, he is beautiful, very intelligent and adorable.
I was just really surprised when I found him, and while he grows up, I see so many characteristics... I have never seen a stray cat like that before, and I have had plenty of cats in my life.
That's why I am wondering, the people in the greek cat forum told me there is no Nebelung cattery in Greece, as far as they know.

I do agree with you, and we will never find out about genetic predictability, as he is sterilised. Nor do we know about the parents.

Would you by any chance remember where that cat was? I mean whether it was in Athens, and a more specific location? We have many cases of "illegal" catteries in Greece, I mean people who have their cats in uncontrolled breeding, all year round, in order to sell the kittens to petshops... there could be a worst case scenario: Gandalf turned out to be less authentic (he has a white locket) and the breeder got rid of him... if this is true, I should find that person and report him to the Greek Cat Association, because breeding is not just for the money... and cat breeding is a very dirty business sometimes in our country, we are trying to control those "catteries" in order to protect the animals and the people who might buy them in the long run, and find out they are sick, or not pure blood or ... well anything is possible.
